Ashwin moves past Steyn, now eighth highest Test wicket taker of all time

Ravichandran Ashwin‘s wicket of Dhananjaya de Silva turned out to be his second milestone of the month. In the Bengaluru Test of Sri Lanka tour of India, Ashwin took six wickets, with de Silva’s becoming the landmark 440th. With this, he moved past Dale Steyn’s tally of 439 to number eight on the list of highest Test wicket takers, and ended the game with number 442.

Earlier, Ashwin’s strong performance in the first Test helped India to a commanding win over Sri Lanka, bundling them out in three days and winning by an innings and 222 runs. He took eight wickets in the match, and the scalps brought him two personal milestones. Not only did he make his entry amongst the top ten Test wicket takers of all time, but he also moved past legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev’s tally of 434.

Ashwin takes 12 wickets from two matches, India clinch series 2-0

Ashwin is now one of three active cricketers to be part of the elite list, behind Anderson (640) and Broad (537). He is the only Indian on the list behind Anil Kumble, who sits at number 4 with 619 wickets. With India clinching the series 2-0 after the 238-run victory at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Ashwin pocketed 12 wickets from the two matches.

Kapil Dev himself congratulated on the Ashwin on the feat, noting that 500 wickets should be his next target. Ashwin also drew accolades from captain Rohit Sharma, who believes he is already an ‘all-time great‘.
