‘Congratulations CSK, legend Daniel Sams is back’ – Twitter baffled by MI selection in CSK clash

Daniel Sams has returned to the Mumbai Indians for their ‘El Clasico’ clash against Chennai Super Kings. What was once an assertion of dominance between champions is now a scrap for who occupies last place on the table. Both teams have chopped and changed their bowling units over the course of their losses, but perhaps no one bowler has suffered as much as Daniel Sams.

MI’s bowlers have struggled this season, and that’s putting it lightly. Only two frontline bowlers, spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and Murugan Ashwin have managed economy rates under eight. Basil Thampi andTymal Mills, who was taken to the cleaners in their last game have both been operating at 9.5 and 11.17 respectively.

Australian Daniel Sams was acquired by Mumbai for 8 crores. Since then he has played three games, taken zero wickets, and conceded 57, 32 and 50 runs from each game. After their game against KKR, when Pat Cummins scored his historic record-equaling 50 off 14 balls, Sams found himself at the receiving end of the assault.

Daniel Sams conceded 35 runs in a single over to Pat Cummins

Sams had bowled moderately well up to the point he had to bowl to Cummins. He had sent down two overs for 15 runs, and returned when KKR needed 30 runs off the last six overs, when the game was already beyond MI’s reach. Cummins was on strike, after hitting 22 off 8 balls. He proceeded to whack three sixes and a four off the first four balls. He was then caught at the boundary rope by Suryakumar Yadav, but it was off a waist-high full toss. After that Cummins smashed another four and a six to finish the match, and looted 35 runs off that over.

That was the last we saw of Sams for a while, but he returns today for MI against CSK in place of Tymal Mills. Twitter users were less than happy about the selection.
