Deepak Chahar picks up a second injury, unlikely to return in IPL 2022

Deepak Chahar’s return to the IPL is in jeapordy. The CSK pacer has been rehabilitating from a quadriceps strain sustained in February, but is now being troubled by his old back injury as well. His recovery had been fast-tracked and CSK were hopeful of having him return by the end of April, but with a second injury in tow this seems doubtful.

The BCCI has not yet communicated official word of the injury to CSK, but they can expect the worst. Chahar is likely to be a part of the BCCI’s plans for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup this year, and they will want to prioritise his recovery in time for the tournament in October.

The 29-year-old, along with being CSK’s trusted new-ball bowler, has also garnered attention for his handy batting lower down the order. He’s scored two half-centuries since making his ODI debut last year. It’s not surprising that he became the second-highest earning member at the 2022 auction behind Ishan Kishan when he was re-acquired by franchise for 14 crores.

CSK still have no replacement for Deepak Chahar

CSK’s season has gone from bad to worse with four back-to-back defeats, and they’re now lodged at the bottom the table. the IPL is 22 games in and they’re still desperately seeking two elusive points. They had pinned all their hopes on the return of their premium bowler Chahar, but this injury update has probably sounded the death-knell for their season.

CSK need at least at least eight from their remaining ten games to have a hope of qualifying ,considering the points table is far more competitive and crowded with the two new teams. All this while making up the heavy battering to their net run-rate from their four drubbings. Even Chahar’s immediate return couldn’t reverse this run of poor form.

Mukesh Choudhary, Tushar Deshpande, Adam Milne and Chris Jordan have all been tried with new ball, but aside from an occasional decent spell, none have clicked so far. CSK haven’t signed an official replacement for Chahar because they were optimistic of his return in the second half of the season, but will be forced to look beyond him now. KM Asif and Rajvardhan Hangarkekar are other options that CSK will want to consider.
