Kane Williamson is not having an easy time of it this IPL. In Sunrisers Hyderabad’s game against Royal Challenger Bangalore on Sunday afternoon, he was run out without facing a ball – his first duck of IPL 2022, and the third diamond duck in the tournament so far.
Williamson has been in notirously poor form throughout SRH’s campaign this year. He has 199 runs from 11 innings, averaging just under 20 with a troubling strike rate of 96. A single half-century came against Gujarat Titans, but he took 46 balls to score 57 at a strike-rate of only 123. Aside from the lone fifty, he has just two scores above twenty from the remaining innings, both occuring against Chennai Super Kings whose bowling attack this year is notoriously weak.
SRH needed a good start to chase down RCB’s 192 runs, but couldn’t get close. Abhishek Sharma was on strike for the first ball of the innings, punched the first ball from Glenn Maxwell down towards cover and took off for a single. Shahbaz Ahmed hurled in the throw toward the striker’s end, and Williamson’s bat was on the line, but not grounded behind. After Williamson was removed first ball, his fellow opener Abhishek Sharma followed within the next three deliveries after being bowled by Maxwell.
So SRH lost both their openers for a duck, one without facing a ball, within the first over of their innings. They never really recovered from being 1-2 at the start.
