Manchester City vs Liverpool Team News:

Manchester City:

Man City was in a battle against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, as seen by Phil Foden’s bandaged head. Pep Guardiola’s team also suffered injuries to Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne, with the former twisting his ankle and the latter requiring stitches in his calf. Guardiola said that the injuries had put his team in “serious jeopardy” before the semi-final, but Ruben Dias was well enough to start at the Wanda Metropolitano, while Gabriel Jesus has returned from his European ban to the squad.

John Stones may be moved to right-back to cover for the injured Walker, while Joao Cancelo could swap wings as either Nathan Ake or Oleksandr Zinchenko return to the left flank, giving Pep Guardiola plenty of choices for substitutions in the defensive positions after Dias’s recovery. Raheem Sterling will almost certainly be called up as a result of De Bruyne’s problem.

However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp might find himself with a full set of choices as his players got through the second leg against Benfica uninjured, though Diogo Jota remains a small worry after a knock sustained in the first game. Several players, including Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, are expected to return to the starting lineup, while Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara came off the bench against Benfica and are expected to start here.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are also expected to return to the starting lineup, with Luis Diaz a possibility to join the African pair after being substituted shortly after the hour mark in the second leg against Benfica on Tuesday.

The One-Liner Explainer:

Man City may have had a chance to put Liverpool away early in their match last week, but injuries to key players sustained during a match against Atletico Madrid, which left its imprint, give Liverpool the edge. In contrast to Pep Guardiola’s starting XI, Klopp was allowed to rest a large number of his star players, and the fresh legs of a free-scoring Liverpool side will be able to slice their way through the City defence once again to progress to the final.
