‘Mocked at start for not having a strong team, then win IPL. Gujarat Titans teaching a life lesson’ – Twitter reacts to GT’s maiden IPL title

Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals in the IPL final to claim a maiden trophy in their debut season. Playing at their home-ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmadabad for the first time, they trounced the Royals by seven wickets, chasing down 130 easily with seven balls remaining. The Titans dominated the tournament right from the start, topping the table with 20 points from 14 games and then cruising past the Royals in Qualifier 1.

They were dominant right from the start, restricting the Royals’ powerful batting lineup to 130 in the first innings. Sanju Samson won only his second toss of the tournament and opted to bat first, but his batting order simply didn’t show up. Jos Buttler top scored for the Royals with 39(35), but he struggled to time the ball and fell to skipper Hardik Pandya before he could make the most of his start.

None of the Royals batters save Yashavi Jaiswal (23 off 16) showed any intent, and their flawed batting order showed up at the worst possible time. They never recorvered after being 79-4, being able to manage only 59 runs from the last ten overs.

The Titans took a slow-and-steady approach to their chase, with opener Shubman Gill anchoring the innings. Remaining undefeated, he scored 45(43) with three fours and a six at a strike-rate of 104, while not brisk, was on par with the required run-rate. Hardik Pandya scored 34(30) before falling to Yuzvendra Chahal. The GT skipper has had an outstanding game, including his 3-17 in the first innings. The Titans’ evergreen finisher David Miller played a late cameo in the end, smashing 32(19) while sharing an unbeaten 47-run partnership with Gill.

It was Gill who hit the winning runs, a flourishing pull for six over square leg off Obed McCoy to seal the title. Cricket Twitter congratulated the Titans on their maiden IPL win.
