‘My inspiration? Umran Malik’ – Dale Steyn tweet goes viral after 148kph yorker to get Iyer

A tweet from Dale Steyn that one day ago has come into the mainstream again after Umran Malik bowled a searing yorker to remove Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer on Friday.

Shreyas Iyer was batting on 28 off 24, with his team 70 for 3 with one ball left in the 10th over. There were three fielders on the boundary on the leg side, and two behind square on the off side, which implied that they were going to attack Shreyas Iyer with some short balls. Iyer has had a very visible discomfort of the short ball too, and his usual method of dealing with those deliveries is to back away into the leg side and slash over the off side.

That’s what Shreyas Iyer tried to do off the last ball of the over against Umran Malik, only to find out that he had been double bluffed by the bowler. What came instead was a feisty yorker at 148.8kph that rattled his stumps as he was moving away into the leg side to try and hit it. In the end, he came nowhere close to it.

Dale Steyn celebrates excitedly in the dug out

As soon as the wicket was taken, the cameras cut to the Sunrisers Hyderabad dug out where Dale Steyn was off his seat and jousting with Muttiah Muralitharan. Both the bowling legends are part of the Sunrisers coaching staff, and it was discussed on live commentary that the wicket had been planned in the dug out between them. It certainly appeared that way as Steyn celebrated with gusto.

At the same time that this was happening, Twitter users began retweeting a tweet from the previous day that Dale Steyn had made during a Q&A session.

During that session, someone had asked Dale Steyn who his inspiration was, and Dale Steyn replied with just two words:

Dale Steyn has only just begun his coaching stint in the IPL, and joined Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier this year. He is overseeing fast bowlers such as Umran Malik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Marco Jansen, and Romario Shepherd.
