Chennai Super Kings have had an anticlimactic start to their season. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Orange Cap winner from the previous season fell in the first over for a duck, caught behind after struggling to get bat on ball for Umesh Yadav’s first over. Half of the side was back in the hut with only 60 runs on the board, and it fell to MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to piece the innings back together.
Robin Uthappa tried to get going, but it was tough going after losing both openers in the Powerplay. Shivam Dube was the victim of a needless runout, and CSK found themselves five wickets down in the 11th over, with their new captain and their celebrated old one at the crease with a big, big task on their shoulders.
CSK fans on Twitter would like to pretend this match never happened.

Ravindra Jadeja has not had the best captaincy debut, with his team struggling to bat at a run a ball for most of the innings.
This CSK innings feels like Kohli's 71st. Struggling to reach 100.

But all this was before a vintage Thala innings that turned back the clock, with the newly relinquished captain scoring his first IPL fifty in two years off 38 balls.

If you don’t love Dhoni, you don’t love cricket. Simple.

A slow start, most of the players rusty after the break.. and a bit of Thala. Typical vintage CSK start for the #IPL, I would say ! #WhistlePodu #Dhoni #CSK

Kolkata Knight Riders have been set a target of 132. New captain Ravindra Jadeja batted right through to the end, but couldn’t really get going in his innings of 26, which took 28 balls, and he managed a single six.
