‘Russell in one over has taken the same number of wickets as Cummins, Varun combined this season’ – Twitter in awe at Russell’s death bowling

Andre Russell bowled a sensational last over against Gujarat Titans in the Kolkata Knight Riders’ fixture against them on Saturday. He bowled only one over in the match, but took four wickets at the death to help restrict GT to 156.

GT were in a good position at the start of the 17th over, three down for 137 and Hardik Pandya batting confidently after his half-century. But he still seemed to be struggling with the groin issue that kept him out of their side’s last game against CSK, and holed out to Tim Southee. The skipper’s dismissal, followed by Rashid Khan falling three balls later pulled back GT’s innings, and they never recovered from there.

Russell was tossed the ball for the twentieth over, and struck first ball. Abhinav Manohar was done in by a slower ball, and couldn’t get any power on a shot that ended up in Rinku Singh’s hands. The very next ball, Lockie Ferguson fell prey to a bouncer and the ball found Rinku again.

Alzarri Joseph saw out the hat-trick ball with a single, and Rahul Tewati managed to hit a long overdue boundary. But that was all the runs GT were destined to make. Another slower bouncer outdid Tewatia, and his top edge found Rinku Singh yet again, this time at sweeper. Russell’s final wicket of the day was Yash Dayal, who lobbed a full back at the bowler. He took an excellent low catch to complete his fourth wicket of the over, and of the match.
