‘Sanju Samson has vantage point as wicketkeeper’ – Ravi Ashwin on RR skipper ahead of IPL 2022

Rajasthan Royals (RR) off-spinner Ravi Ashwin reckoned that Sanju Samson has the potential to shine as a captain in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). Samson replaced Steve Smith as the skipper of the Royals in the 2021 edition of the T20 league. He played some handy knocks, including a century against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), but his team failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Ashwin, who played two seasons for the Delhi Capitals (DC) before joining the Royals, said that Samson has the ability to read game situations with precision. The veteran also backed the youngster to get better with time.

Ravi Ashwin praises Sanju Samson, believes he will improve even more with age

“I think Sanju has got an amazing attitude and a good head on his shoulders. He’s always open for discussion, open to opinions around the game, so that’s a great quality to have,” Ashwin told.

“I do believe Sanju has got the vantage point as a wicketkeeper to judge the game with all the angles, the pitch and how things are going to work. He also has age on his side, and will definitely get better,” he added.

Prior to the mega auction, the Royals retained three players, Samson, England’s Jos Buttler and young India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal. The 2008 IPL champions shelled out INR 14 crores for Samson before the mega auction on February 12 and 13 in Bangalore.

The Royals snapped up Ashwin at INR 5 crores in the auction. After registering at a base price of INR 2 crores, the Capitals and the Royals were involved in a bidding war to secure the services of one of India’s premier spinners. In the end, RR bagged him. The Royals also roped in Yuzvendra Chahal at a price of INR 6.50 crores.

The Royals are set to start their campaign in IPL 2022 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), led by Kane Williamson, on Tuesday, March 29 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Over the last few seasons, the Royals have struggled to make it through to the playoffs despite having some big names in their ranks. They will be looking to make amends in the upcoming season of the T20 tournament.
