Umran Malik was on fire during the Sunrisers Hyderbad’s game against Gujarat Titans on Wednesday. He took his first ever five-wicket haul conceding only 25 runs at 6.25 rpo, and in doing so became only the first bowler in IPL to dismiss each of the top five batters in a side. With 14 wickets from 8 games, he is now the third highest wicket taker in the tournament, behind Yuzvendra Chahal and teammate T Natarajan.
Malik was the pick of the bowlers by far. He clocked consistently over 145 kph, and the GT batters were repeatedly beaten by his pace. Of his five wickets, one was caught in the deep off a third edge but the remaining were bowled, four batters utterly scrambled by Malik’s blistering speed and missing the line completely.
Shubman Gill was Malik’s first victim when he was introduced right after the powerplay. Gill had played second fiddle to Wriddhiman Saha, and taken 23 balls to add 22 runs. Malik cramped him with a 144kph ripper that crashed on to the off stump. Hardik Pandya was the next to fall prey, and skipper Kane’s plan to dismiss him was executed beautifully as the batter tried to play late and sent a top edge sailing into the hands of fine third man.

Wriddhiman Saha was the next to go, though he was playing the innings of his life for his 68 off 38 balls. He was completely beaten by a low full delivery that missed the bat by a mile and destroyed middle and leg stump. ‘Killer’ Miller had his middle stump uprooted an over later, by what was possibly the best delivery of all. Bowled at 148kph, the lethal delivery was bowled back of a length and David Miller simply swung at thin air before the ball hit timber. The South African was dismissed for 17 off 19 balls, unable to recreate the magic that pulled off the remarkable win against CSK.
If Malik had somehow been allowed to bowl more than his quota of four, he might have cleaned up the entire side. Abhinav Monohar was the final victim to fall on the last ball of a devastating spell, and was sent back for a first-ball duck after a 146kph delivery ripped apart his off and middle stump.
Twitter users were blown away by Malik’s fiery spell.

If you still needed evidence that genuine pace works whatever the format or conditions, play these 4 Umran Malik overs again & again. Most wonderful thing is how much he’s matured over 2 season. Without sacrificing any pace, mercifully. #IPL2022

The rise and rise of Umran Malik is the story of this IPL. So far he's been coming to bowl with opposition under pressure but this time came when GT were wicketless and took down the top 3 🔥 #SRHvGT #IPL2022 pic.twitter.com/XCfS59VlIK

Umran Malik is ripping it. Magnificent control of length and mostly razor-sharp lines. For a batter, facing 153kph means having about .07-.09 seconds less than when facing 135kph. That's more than enough time for the ball to sneak past the bat and destroy the stumps.
