‘Sure you don’t want to captain one more season so I can play under you?’ – CSK opener Devon Conway to MS Dhoni

New Zealand batter Devon Conway made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings, in their opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders. The 30-year-old, bought at the auction for his base price of 1 crore, was meant to be a like-for-like replacement for Faf du Plessis at the top of the order. But those were big shoes to fill.

Conway’s IPL debut didn’t go as planned, in fact none of CSK’s plans for that match came to pass. Their batting order collapsed, requiring a gutsy half-century from captaincy-free MS Dhoni to take them to a halfway respectable total of 130, which was easily chased down.

But as far as debuts go for Conway, only his IPL one was out of the ordinary. The left-hander opened for New Zealand in his debut Test against England in June last year, and scored a sparkling 200 in his first ever innings. Conway shows big promise, and will undoubtedly blossom under the leadership and management of CSK’s new skipper Ravindra Jadeja, and of course MS Dhoni.

Devon Conway feels he will benefit greatly from interacting with two ‘legends of Indian cricket’

“I was wanting to play under the great MS as captain,” Conway admitted, in a video posted to CSK’s Twitter. “I had a nice little conversation with him. I said, ‘you’re sure you don’t want to captain one more season so I can play under you as captain?’ But he said, ‘no, but I am always going to be around anyways. It was really cool.”

Conway admires the the humility of Jadeja and Dhoni, marveling at at how ‘normal’ they seem despite their legendary status in India. He said, “a couple of days ago I had lunch and sat in between MS and Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja). It was really cool just to get to know them better.”

Conway continued, “they’re just normal guys, down-to-earth, no aura about them. They’re so easy to get along with and talk to,
really good to interact with those two legends of Indian cricket.
