‘Thank you for winning, thought we’d beat MI’s record’ – KKR fans on Twitter relieved with win after five losses

Kolkata Knight Riders completed a 7-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in their fixture against them on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium. The win will come as a relief for KKR after five straight defeats and lifts them one position on the points table, slipping past Punjab Kings from eighth to seventh position. RR meanwhile held on to their top-four spot, remaining at number three.

The game was set up nicely by KKR’s clinical bowling unit who restricted RR to 152, and seen through to the end by a blistering  undefeated partnership between Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh. KKR had a rickety start to the chase, after  Baba Indrajith top-edged a bouncer from Prasidh Krishna, and Aaron Finch had his off-stump removed by Kuldeep Sen within the first six overs.

Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh remain undefeated to take KKR home

Despite losing their openers within the powerplay for only 32 runs, skipper Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana rallied around. The two added a 60-run partnership off 43 balls, and kept the game well within KKR’s reach. While Shreyas was circumspect for his 32-ball 34, Rana smacked two fours and a six off Ravichandran Ashwin in a over that went for 16 runs. Once the skipper was dismissed after edging a short ball from Trent Boult to the keeper, 24-year-old Rinku Singh arrived at the crease and stamped his authority all over the match.

Rinku hit six fours and a six in his 22-ball stay at the crease, scoring 42 and striking at 182. When he arrived KKR needed 61 from the 43 balls; they managed it within 38. Rana and Rinku Singh stitched together a blistering 66-run partnership off only 38 balls to ease KKR home, granting their side their fourth win of the season, and their first victory in six games.
