‘What’s the point of Shami in reserves for WC, but playing vs Aus and SA?’ – mixed Twitter reactions to Shami’s T20 comeback

The BCCI has simultaneously announced the squads for the ICC T20 World Cup, and the home T20 series against South Africa and Australia. While the batters and spin unit are mostly the same across all series, the squad sees some major changes in the pace department.

Avesh Khan has been dropped for all three tournaments. He has failed to deliver in terms of both wickets and economy rate in the Asia Cup and the Zimbabwe and West Indies tours that preceded it. Against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup, he conceded 53 runs – an economy rate of 13.25 – while picking up only one wicket, and was dropped after that game.

There was some talk of Mohammed Shami returning to the squad during the Asia Cup as India were hamstrung without their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and Harshal Patel. Shami has been included in the reserves for the T20 World Cup, along with Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar, but is part of the main squads against Australia and South Africa. The selectors have chosen to go with the tried and tested unit of Bumrah, Harshal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Arshdeep Singh, who has proved himself admirably at the Asia Cup.

With Shami included in the SA and Aus tours, both Arshdeep and Bhuvneshwar will only play one tour each after the World Cup, along with Hardik Pandya. According to the BCCI, this is because the three of them will be “reporting to the NCA for conditioning-related work during the course of the home series against Australia and South Africa”.
