‘Why bring in youngsters when you can bring back prime Robin Uthappa?’ – Twitter hails vintage Uthappa innings

Robin Uthappa played his best-ever IPL knock in CSK’s clash today against RCB. He opened the batting alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, and scored 88 off 49 balls striking at 178, hitting four boundaries and nine sixes, the highest number of sixes by any player so far this season.

CSK have been slow starters in the past, but they seem to be taking it to a whole other level this IPL. They scored 35 runs in the powerplay, losing Ruturaj lbw for 17. Moeen Ali was runout for 3 in the seventh over, and CSK were 60 for 2 at the halfway stage. They scored 116 runs in next ten, courtesy of the assault launched by Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa. Dube played the innings of his life, scoring 95 off 46. The two added a partnership of 165 off 74 balls.

The acceleration in the latter half of the innings was astounding. Uthappa, who had put on 23 off 22 balls, freed his arms against Maxwell in the 13th over and slapped him for three highly satisfying sixes. Dube had been going strong at the other end, and 50 runs were added in just 14 – fourteen! – balls. That’s the same number of deliveries Pat Cummins took the other night to bring up the joint-fastest fifty of IPL.

Uthappa also enjoyed the services of Akash Deep and Mohammad Siraj, with their combined overs bleeding for 95 runs. He brought up his 50 with a streaking boundary off Siraj. Two balls later Uthappa hit it straight to the deep square leg fielder, but what RCB-CSK clash would be complete without a no-ball incident? Siraj overstepped, and Uthappa plundered more than 30 runs before being holing out off the bowling of Hasaranga.

Uthappa’s innings took Twitter fans back fifteen years in time, and rehashing memories of the young wristy power-hitter from 2007.
